Juba, South Sudan – January 22, 2026 — The Ministry of Mining of the Republic of South Sudan took a significant step toward strengthening cooperation with industry stakeholders as the Minister of Mining, Hon. Losuba Ludoru Wongo, and the Undersecretary, Hon. Deng Makuok Duyak, convened an introductory meeting with leading mining companies and senior sector representatives in Juba.

The high-level engagement, attended by senior Ministry officials, members of the Chamber of Mines, and representatives from various mining companies operating in South Sudan, focused on the future direction of the country’s mining industry and the collective role stakeholders must play in transforming the sector into a driver of national economic growth.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Losuba Ludoru Wongo emphasized the strategic importance of the mining sector to South Sudan’s long-term economic diversification agenda. He described mineral resources as critical national assets capable of contributing to sustainable development, job creation, and national stability if managed responsibly.

The Minister called on both government institutions and private sector actors to work together in unlocking the vast mineral potential of the country. He noted that collaboration, transparency, and responsible investment would be essential in positioning South Sudan as a competitive destination for mining investment within the region.

“Our mineral resources are strategic national assets that must be managed responsibly for the benefit of present and future generations,” Hon. Wongo stated. “The mining sector has the potential to become a major pillar of economic diversification beyond oil.”

The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Hon. Deng Makuok Duyak, reinforced the Minister’s message by stressing the importance of responsible resource management and environmental stewardship in mining operations across the country.

He highlighted the need for mining companies and operators to fully comply with the Mining Act and other regulatory frameworks governing the sector. According to the Undersecretary, adherence to legal and environmental standards is necessary to ensure sustainable exploitation of mineral resources and to protect communities and ecosystems affected by mining activities.

“The development of the mining sector must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility and strict compliance with national mining laws,” Hon. Deng Makuok Duyak noted during the discussions.

Representatives from the Chamber of Mines and other industry leaders welcomed the Ministry’s initiative, describing the meeting as a positive step toward improving dialogue and partnership between government and private sector stakeholders.

Participants engaged in extensive discussions on key challenges affecting the industry, including regulatory implementation, licensing procedures, infrastructure limitations, investor confidence, and the need for enhanced geological data and technical capacity.

Industry representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Government’s vision for a transparent, accountable, and sustainable mining sector capable of contributing meaningfully to South Sudan’s economic transformation.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continued engagement and collaboration aimed at fostering growth, attracting responsible investment, and building a strong foundation for the future of South Sudan’s mining industry.

As the country continues efforts to diversify its economy beyond petroleum dependence, the Ministry’s engagement with industry stakeholders signals a renewed focus on strengthening governance, promoting investor confidence, and unlocking the untapped potential of South Sudan’s mineral wealth.
